VIPS (Vehicle Integrated Protection System) Motorcycle Cover Review

nullThe guys over at EmpireCovers.com sent me one of their VIP Motorcycle Covers and asked me to check it out. Now just so you guys know I do not use a cover, I have a garage and besides that my bike hardly sets still long enough to be covered. I know there are a lot of folks out there that either do not have a garage or store their bike over the winter, the VIP cover would be a great product for you folks.

Even though I do not personally use a cover on my bike I would recommend the Empire Covers VIP Motorcycle Cover to anyone looking for a cover to protect or store their bike.

The VIP Motorcycle Cover is designed to protect your bike from moisture, dust, and the sun. The manufacturer states that the cover will fit every mass-produced motorcycle up to 1500cc. It fit my Heritage with 20″ apehangers just fine with room to spare.

The VIP Motorcycle Cover In It’s Storage Bag

The cover is a 2 piece cover that completely covers your bike from top to bottom. The lower cover is made from a heavy rubberized material and the top cover is a heavy duty polyester which is lined to protect your bikes finish.

When folded the VIP motorcycle cover measures about 16″x11″x5″ and weighs approximately 8 lbs.

nullAbout the only thing that I can say negative is that the cover did not come with any instructions so it did take me a bit to figure the thing out the first time I used it. After that it did not take anytime to cover my bike.

Since the cover did not come with any instructions I was not sure if you could use the cover on a motorcycle while the engine and exhuast was hot so I a dropped a note to Empire Covers Customer Service and they said that the cover was designed so that it could be installed on a hot bike. Just so you know I did not try this, and I would recommend that you wait for your bike to cool at least some before installing this cover or any cover. Covering a hot engine can lead to condensation inside the cover which kind of defeats the purpose.

A Night of Arena Racing - Thanks Chick-Fil-A!

Saturday 5 January 2008 @ 11:57 pm

Tonight we decide to take the kids out to Arena Racing at the Hampton Coliseum. Arena racing is an indoor race where the drivers are in go-carts dressed up to look like Winston Cup stock cars. They race on a small indoor track and reach speeds in excess of 50 MPH. It is a pretty good time. Sandy and I have been before but this was the first time we have taken the kids.

We all had a great time - and it was FREE! Yep, FREE! I had planned to buy tickets, they were not that expensive - $5 each for the kids and $15 each for me and Sandy. Anyway we are on our way up to the ticket booth at the Coliseum when a guy from Chick-Fil-A asked us if we had tickets yet. I told him we were on the way to get them and he handed us four tickets to the race. So …

Thank you Chick-Fil-A, we had a great time.

I don’t really know much about any of the drivers. A few of the names are familiar since most of them are local to the area, and I think I went to High School with some of them or probably some of their parents. Most of the time we just pick a number a cheer them on. Tonight we picked number 80, which was the car sponsored by the US Army. Car 80 finished first in the A race and second in the “Top Dog” race.

If you are looking for something kind of cool to do with the family, check out Arena Racing if it comes to your town.

North Carolina Bikers Protest Changes to Helmet Law

Wednesday 2 January 2008 @ 9:24 pm

North Carolina has had a helmet law for all riders for years, a change went into effect yesterday that “better” specifies the type of helmets that can be worn. Yesterday bikers across the state of NC held rides to protest the new law.

GREENSBORO — Hundreds of bikers across the state broke a new law in an act of civil disobedience. “We call this the ride to choose. Everyone who rode here today chose what safety gear they wanted to wear. Some didn’t wear any,” said participant Dave Carroll.

Call it civil disobedience or defending their rights. Hundreds of motorcyclists from all over North Carolina rode for their freedom Tuesday, protesting a new, restrictive helmet law.

Geek Stuff: New Gadget - ASUS Eee PC

Wednesday 2 January 2008 @ 8:04 am

Here is the first of many to come “Geek Stuff” posts, a new category I have started for the new year. They may not all be biker related but if you are in to computers and gadgets you should find these informative and cool.

The ASUS Eee PC

ASUS Eee PC 4G Galaxy Black Intel processor 7

Before Christmas I picked up this cool little gadget the ASUS Eee PC 4GB Galaxy Black from NewEgg.

I was looking for something to take with me on road trips so that I could access email and check out the site. Traveling with a laptop is great, besides checking your email, you can check local weather, look for local attractions, and a number of other things.

The biggest problem I had with taking my laptop was it’s size and I really worried about the abuse it received from traveling. Did that last bump do it in?

The Eee PC fits right nicely in my saddle bag! Since it does not have any moving parts (Solid State Drive) it should be right durable and handle road trips fine.

The Eee PC is a highly portable, light-weight (right around 2 lbs.), full powered laptop PC. Folded up it measures just a little larger than a 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of paper folded in half. It opens to a 7″ LCD screen and a full keyboard. It has Wifi, a Webcam, integrated sound, and a microphone. It also has 3 USB ports and an SD card slot. The battery last a little over 3 hours on a full charge.

The keyboard is a little small and takes a bit of getting use to, but after a few minutes I can type on it almost as fast as I can on a full keyboard. The 7″ LCD screen is surprisingly nice. Check out more of the article for an actual screen shot. It has a 4 GB Solid State Disk and 512MB of RAM.
