Ride to Work Day

This year’s seventeenth annual motorcycle and scooter commuting demonstration will increase the number of riders on the road, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. “Riding to work on this day shows the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. For many people, riding is an economical, efficient and socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits,” states Andy Goldfine, the event organizer. Motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts and rider organizations worldwide encourage their members to ride to work on this day.

According to the United States Census Bureau and the Department of Transportation, over eighty million cars and light trucks are used for daily commuting on American roads, and about 200,000 motorcycles and scooters are a regular part of this mix. On Ride To Work Day, the practical side of riding becomes more visible as a larger number of America’s 8,000,000 cycles are ridden to work.

Ride to Work Day helps demonstrate how these vehicles make parking easier and help traffic flow better. Studies have shown that across equal distances, commuting motorcyclists reach their destinations in less time than those using automobiles, that motorcycles and scooters consume less resources per mile than automobiles, and that they take up less space on roads. Motorcycle and scooter riders seek improved employer recognition and support for this form of transportation, and more public and government awareness of the positive value of riding.

Screw It - Let’s Ride!

Sunday 4 May 2008 @ 8:38 pm

CHICAGO (Reuters) - “Screw it. Let’s Ride.” That’s the advice that Harley-Davidson Inc, the motorcycle maker whose sales have been dragged down by the U.S. economic slowdown, has for customers fearful of falling home values, rising gas prices and a stagnant job market.

“Over the last 105 years in the saddle, we’ve seen wars, conflicts, depression, recession, resistance and revolution,” reads the ad, which shows a helmeted rider on a Harley chopper silhouetted against what appears to be the red and white stripes of a slightly tattered American flag.

“We’ve watched a thousand hand-wringing pundits disappear in our rear-view mirror. But every time this country has come out stronger than before …. If 105 years have proved one thing, it’s that fear sucks and it doesn’t last long. So screw it, let’s ride.”

Now that’s what I am talking about.

Make rrrroom for motorcycle safety

Friday 2 May 2008 @ 6:59 am

Spring is when motorcyclists from the northern half of the country dust off their boots and get on their motorcycles for the first ride of the year. Riders from the South take road trips to escape the heat. That is why state and federal agencies recognize each May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This year Congress will weigh in as well.

Best Western Goes Rider Friendly

Friday 25 April 2008 @ 9:30 pm

The wife and I usually stay at a Best Western down is Salisbury for the Smoke Out. Good folks, clean room, awesome HOT breakfast. There is also one at around I-95 Georgia Exit 3 that we stay at from time to time on the way down to Daytona.

More than 1,000 Best Western hotels in the United States and Canada have been identified as “rider-friendly,” the company announced today, offering motorcycle riders wipe-down towels at check in and access to a wash station at no additional cost . In addition, some properties offer designated parking, tar remover, sunscreen and lip balm.

VA Legislative Update!

Thursday 31 January 2008 @ 11:51 am

Here’s an update on the motorcycle related legislation currently being acted on by the General Assembly in Virginia.

—-

SB698 (Motorcycle Helmet) has made it through the Second Reading and is on to the Third. Thank you for all your letters and effort. It has paid off! It is up for Third Reading now, and if it makes it, will go to the House. Then we will need to get to work again to get it passed there.

SB556 (Right of Way - reckless driving) made it out of full committee today uncontested! This is great news and each of you deserve a big thank you for all your hard work. Next it will hit the Senate Floor for First Reading. We are hopeful that since it came out of committee uncontested, there will be no issues on the Senate Floor. Please stand by to write letters if needed.

There is no Call to Action at this time. Please stand ready as we watch what happens in the coming days.

Keep up the great work, Patriots! You’re doing a fantastic job.

Yours in Liberty,
Penny

VA Helmet Law Reform

Friday 25 January 2008 @ 8:49 am

This is from Penny the Legislative Officer of the VFR. It doesn’t get them off our heads, but it is a step in the right direction!

SB698 (Motorcycle helmets. Provides for a $25 civil penalty for the conviction of a motorcyclist who fails to wear a helmet. At present, a violation is a traffic infraction and punishable by a fine of up to $250.) has made it out of the Senate Transportation Committee with a 10 - 4 vote.

Below are some of the talking points we are using to support SB698

* Brings a violation of 46.2-910 in line with the seat belt penalty
* Currently, a seat belt violation is a $25 civil fine, no court costs, no points
* An unbelted minor child is a $50 civil fine, no court costs, no points
* An improper helmet ticket is a minimum of $25 fine plus $65 court costs ($90) and the judge has the discretion to make it a $250 fine (it currently carries no points)

While this doesn’t give us back our freedom to choose whether to wear a helmet, it is one piece of a larger plan. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

North Carolina Bikers Protest Changes to Helmet Law

Wednesday 2 January 2008 @ 9:24 pm

North Carolina has had a helmet law for all riders for years, a change went into effect yesterday that “better” specifies the type of helmets that can be worn. Yesterday bikers across the state of NC held rides to protest the new law.

GREENSBORO — Hundreds of bikers across the state broke a new law in an act of civil disobedience. “We call this the ride to choose. Everyone who rode here today chose what safety gear they wanted to wear. Some didn’t wear any,” said participant Dave Carroll.

Call it civil disobedience or defending their rights. Hundreds of motorcyclists from all over North Carolina rode for their freedom Tuesday, protesting a new, restrictive helmet law.
